Who is a Contender Who is a Pretender

The Playoffs for many teams are already here. The 7-8-9 spots are all tied in the west and the battle to make it into the East is getting tighter. With all these teams battling to make it to the playoffs we now take a look at teams that are legitimate contenders and teams that are about as real as a conclusion ever being found on "Lost."

DeeGee's Votes

The Lakers. Contenders Healthy Bynum is the key.
The Suns. Contenders Shaq brings the experience.
The Spurs. Contenders The champs are in playoff form right now.
The Rockets. Pretenders 22 wins in a row and might miss the Playoffs?
The Jazz. Contenders If everyone stays healthy (AK looking at you)
The Hornets. Pretenders I still feel they are a year away from serious contention.
The Mavericks. Pretenders The worst trade this season.
The Nuggets. Pretenders The chemistry is not solid.
The Warriors. Contenders If the Warriors make it they will be dangerous.

The Celtics. Contenders Please play the Suns or the Lakers in the finals
The Pistons. Contenders Please everyone get food poisoning
The Magic. Pretenders The most inconsistent team in the East
The Cavs. Contenders LeBron needs his teammates to step up
The Wizards. Pretenders No Gilbert, no advance.
The Raptors. Pretenders Team Europe won't be able to take the bruising playoffs
The Sixers. Contenders This team is for real, the most underrated team in the NBA
The Hawks. Pretenders More playing time for Solomon Jones, please.
The Nets. Pretenders Lottery pick is what they should be playing for.

Webster Facial Over Wright

I know I am biased because I am a Blazers fan, but I also am a Tarheels fan, so this was bittersweet. But Here is Martell Webster destroying Brandon Wright. Enjoy! And Tarheel haters, take your junk somewhere else.

The 2000 NBA draft redone

By DeeGee

I plan on redoing every draft class since 2000 to the present into what could have happened. Though the 2000 draft is considered by many as one of the worst drafts in the history of the NBA here is what it could have looked like.

BEECEE, or EMMDUB, if you think I am wrong let me know.

Draft Pick---------------------------My Pick

1. Kenyon Martin-------------------Kenyon Martin, Nets>> At the time New Jersey needed a big guy with any kind of skill. They had Evan Eschmeyer, or Jim McIlvane. Though some people might have taken other players they did have a few descent smaller players in Kerry Kittles, Marbury, and Stephen Jackson.

2. Stromile Swift-------------------Michael Redd, Grizzlies>> Maybe the Grizzlies would have won a few more games with Redd. It would have been great to see him paired with Mike Bibby. Interesting to see that Redd slipped all the way to the middle of the second round in this weak draft.

3. Darius Miles--------------------Mike Miller, Clippers>>The Clippers had some okay talent, but having a good shooter like Mike Miller would have been great with Odom, and Maggette.

4. Marcus Fizer-------------------Hedo Turkoglu, Bulls>>I might put Jamal Crawford here, but the Bulls could get him anyway with a later pick. The Bulls could have been nice with Elton Brand, Brad Miller, Ron Artest, Hedo Turkoglu, and Fred Hoiberg.

5.Mike Miller---------------------Jamaal Magloire, Magic>> One of three current All-Star players from this list, the Magic needed a big man. They had Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady, the best available big man is Jamaal Magloire.

6.DerMarr Johnson--------------Jamal Crawford, Hawks>>The Hawks had Dikembe, Jason Terry and a number of okay role players. Jamal Crawford could have been a good pick here or trade to the Bulls who really wanted him.

7. Chris Mihm-------------------Morris Peterson, Bulls>> Mo' Pete would have been great with the bulls, they could have been 9 excellent players deep if they had selected correctly.

8. Jamal Crawford--------------Quenton Richardson, Cavaliers>>The Cavaliers needed help anywhere. They had Zydrunas and Andre Miller, and some other okay players like Clarence Weatherspoon, Lamond Murray, J.R Reid and Wesly Person but that was about it.

9.Joel Przybilla----------------Darius Miles, Rockets>> As much as I like Priz, the Rockets had a great team with Olajuwon, Francis, and Mobley. Darius Miles could have been pretty good here under Rudy T and this high scoring group.

10.Keyon Dooling-------------Marko Jaric, Magic>> Marko and Keyon score the same amount, but Marko has way more assists. With Grant Hill, McGrady, and Magloire they would need someone to get them the ball.

11.Jerome Moiso-------------Joel Przybilla, Boston Celtics>> The Celtics had Kenny Anderson, Paul Pierce, and Antoine Walker. Joel could have been a defensive and rebounding force for them on the inside.

12.Etan Thomas-------------Desmond Mason, Dallas Mavericks>> The Mavericks had Steve Nash, Dirk, Michael Finley and some great role players. My choice would have been the next good available player on the board and that would be Desmond Mason

13.Courtney Alexander------Chris Mihm, Clippers>> The Clippers just needed some more size. They had Olowokandi and Odom, but after that not much. Chris Mihm would have been a great sixth man here.

14.Mateen Cleaves----------Speedy Claxton, Pistons>> 9 points, 4 assists and 1.7 steals would be great to have coming off the bench for the Pistons back then. They had Stackhouse, Chucky Atkins, Ceballos, and Ben Wallace. Speedy might have really helped in this pick. More than Eric Montross helped them.

15.Jason Collier--------------Stromile Swift, Milwaukee Bucks>> The Bucks had Same Cassell, Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Rafer Alston, and Glen Robinson, but no big guy. The choice came down to Stromile Swift and Primoz Brezec, and Stromiles numbers were just a bit better, though I may change this choice later.

16.Hedo Turkoglu------------Keyon Dooling, Kings>> The Kings had Webber, Doug Christie, Stojakovic, Divac and Jason Williams. They needed a point guard other than Jason Williams. Keyon could have battled for a starting spot here and maybe backed up Bibby when he came later.

17.Desmond Mason----------Ime Udoka, Supersonics>>Ask any Blazer fan or Spurs fan and they will tell you this guy can flat out play. He went undrafted in 2000 and that was a mistake. He plays superb defense and shoots close to 40% from the three. Even now, he will defensively play the best player on the other team in the fourth quarter instead of Bruce Bowen.

18.Quentin Richardson--------Eduardo Najera, Clippers>>This team lacked defense and he would have been a great stopper for them

19.Jamaal Magloire-----------DeShawn Stevenson, Hornets>> The hornets could have used this player. With Baron Davis, Mashburn, PJ Brown, Elden Campbell, and a sober Derrick Coleman, they could have been pretty good.

20.Speedy Claxton-----------Eddie House, 76ers>> The sixers needed anybody else coming off the bench who could shoot and Eddie has no hesitation shooting the ball. Maybe they wouldn't have gone to Pepe Sanchez coming off the bench.

21.Morris Peterson-----------Courtney Alexander, Raptors>> What a mystery this guy was. He was the leading scorer in college while at Fresno State and once averaged 17 points a game in the NBA, but he only played from 2000-2003. Then he hung them up. He tried to come back a few years later but never made it. Maybe if he was on the raptors things would have changed.

22.Donnel Harvy-------------Etan Thomas, Knicks>> The Knicks had Larry Johnson, Sprewell, Allan Houston, Camby, Glen Rice, Kurt Thomas, Chris Childs, and Charlie Ward. Glen Rice and Larry Johnson were getting old, they needed another big guy to help out Camby and Thomas is a decent back up big guy.

23.Deshawn Stevenson-------Primoz Brezec, Jazz>> Stockton to Malone and that was about it. But they did have John Starks and Bryon Russell. Atleast Primoz could have split time with Greg Ostertag.

24.Dalibar Bagaric------------Mark Madsen, Pacers>>The mad dog could have brought some toughness to the Pacers and played some valuable minutes. With Jermaine O'neal, Al Harrington, Reggie Miller, Jeff Foster, Derrick McKey, and Croshere he might not have saw much time, but he could definitley give 6 fouls to Shaq.

25.Jake Tsakalidis-----------Malik Allen, Suns>> Another person who did not get drafted this year, Allen would have been a great pickup. Gugliotta, Rex Chapman and Cliff Robinson were getting old. They had Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Mario Ellie, Anfernee Hardaway, and Tony Delk.

26.Mamadou N'Diaye------- Jerome Moiso, Nuggets>> Jerome has played with the championship team in Spain for many years and is still a decent player. He played a while in the NBA but was lurred away for a big contract in Spain.

27.Primoz Brezec-----------Jason Hart, Pacers>> It would be hard to put Hart here because he would see zero playing time and as the Jazz have discovered is an okay bench player.

28.Erick Barkley-----------Richie Frahm>>If the Blazers were looking for a guard they should have got Frahm. He is a pure shooter and can score in bunches if needed. ( Though they eventually picked Frahm up later)

29.Mark Madsen---------Marcus Fizer>>I considered putting Jake Voskuhl here but I bet the Zen Master could have turned Fizer into a player. He just never saw minutes behind Elton Brand, and eventually drifted to be a star in the European Leagues.

This draft was awful. The second round was about as useless as male nipples. and I am depressed to see how bad it was. So many players this year were supposed to be amazing, Swift, Fizer, Darius Miles, DerMarr Johnson, Khalid El-Amin, AJ Guyton, "Scoonie" Penn, Donnell Harvey and they basically were busts. 2001 wasn't great, but it was much better than the 2000 draft.

Secondary response...what were they thinking??

BY BEECEE

Pau Gasol got the ball rolling...then BAM! NBA exects start acting like idiot lemmings, trading for anyone they can get. I feel like this is almost common knowledge now, but my cohort things he has a great counter point.

The Pau Gasol trade was a stroke of pure genius, it's what makes the Lakers a good, big market team. It was smart, well timed and no one saw it coming. They did their homework and found a trade no one thought could happen and found a perfect fit. Instant contender! It reminded me of what the Jazz did to get Boozer a few years back. They new what players were going to be a good fit in their system, saw the oppportunity, didn't notify all of these media outlets with a leak, and closed just what everyone was wondering what was going on. That's how you do it right.

Now look at the Mavericks, a team with a history of doing too little, too late. Don't want to spend too much on a solid point guard, Nash to the Suns, need a big man to jump with Duncan, Dampier makes millions, Lakers get Gasol, They go back and get a....guard?!? Good one, Cuban. Good one. Now what's the result? A one dimensional team has it's one dimension get injured (so long Dirk) and now their hopes are on the shoulders of Kidd...just like they have done in NJ...and that worked out so well!

Next look at the Suns. They've made their living by having a team that doesn't stop running all game long, they know each other so well Nash can just FEEL where they are on the court. They are entertaining to watch and the most exciting team in the league. Marion had some grumblings, but still played well. Then the lakers get Gasol and they throw it all away and get Shaq. He doesn't play their style of ball, he's old, he's a liability, and he can't play Gasol any better than Staudomire could have. I'm sure Dantoni is just happy that his european style of ball has been thrown out and now they play the half-court game like everyone else, only worse.

At the end of the season and heading into the playoff, teams knowing each other well and playing effeciently is what makes the difference, especially in the ultra close Western Conference. The kind of knowledge that playing a season of games can produce. Change it late, shake things up with new blood and, pray you make the playoffs.

RESPONSE BY DEEGEE

Bee, you are a complete idiot.

The Gasol trade was good. I agree
The Mavericks trade was not good. I agree
The Suns trade for Shaq was bad. You, my friend, are a numbnuts.

The suns have one seven straight! Are you kidding me? Shaq to the Suns will be the reason that the Suns advance far into the Playoffs. As Charles Barkley would say, "The Suns now have stremf." The Suns are destroying teams now, and are starting to score in the high hundreds again. The last 6 scores have been 122, 110, 110, 127, 123, and 132. Plus, now they have the experience of a champion in Shaq, and did you see Shaq destroy the Blazers in Portland?

BeeCee, Lunch at Sonic says the Suns end up with the best record in the West. Ahh yes, the Sun will definitely rise in Phoenix.

THE FUTURE AWARDS

My Rewards Show of the Future:

I have decided to host an awards show for awards that players have not won yet, but that they will eventually win before their career is over. Would anyone in the year 2002 have guessed that Steve Nash would eventually win back-to-back MVP awards? Probably not. Here are a few of my predictions. First the All-Stars, including the easy picks, and the long shot picks and the super sleeper picks. Also in this list is the Future Defensive Player of the year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved, and the MVP.

1.Future All-Stars That Have Never Been

WEST

The easy picks:

  • Kevin Martin

  • Leandro Barbosa

  • Monte Ellis: Monte Ellis and Leandro Barbosa have the most amazing ability to run like 600 mph and finger roll or layup the ball with the lightest touch. These two are easy locks for future all stars

  • Chris Kaman: Ever since he shaved his hair off Chris Kaman has been amazing on an awful team. Once Brand is back, Livingston, and everyone else. (The Clippers have the most games missed due to injuries in the whole league) Chris Kaman will finally get the recognition for all-star that he deserves

  • Tyson Chandler

  • Manu Ginobili

  • Andrew Bynum

  • Deron Williams: Not only will he be an All-Star, but Deron Williams may win an MVP award. Maybe a Finals MVP. The Jazz have had problems all year, one of them being they tend to play down to poor teams levels, especially Deron. Hopefully he can get past that.

  • Al Jefferson

  • LaMarcus Aldridge

  • Rudy Gay: Rudy Gay Like Al Jefferson is on an abysmal team. Both of these guys numbers are just amazing for how bad the teams are. Though I must admit, I think the Timberwolves have a much better chance at being good then the Grizzlies in the future. And did you see this Rudy Gay dunk on Scola and Dikembe?

The Jamaal Magluire picks: (Long shots or one time all stars)

  • Kelenna Azubuike: This would be great to see a D-League player make the all-star team, and of all the D-League players he has the best chance.

  • Corey Maggette goes to the free throw line almost 10 times a game. And now he has developed a mid-range game also, he is going to be scary.

  • Jordan Farmar

  • Rafer Alston

  • Randy Foye

  • Francisco Garcia is going to be the face of the Kings soon, as soon as the Kings get rid of Ron Artest. He has stepped up his game lately, and with Kevin Martin will eventually get the Kings to the Playoffs again

Sleeper Picks

  • Mike Conley

  • Shaun Livingston

  • Travis Outlaw

  • Rudy Fernandez: Many people don't know this kid out of Spain. He is the reigning Spanish League MVP and is amazing with the ball. Don't believe me? check out this mix:

EAST

Easy Picks:

  • Quentin Richardson

  • Andre Iguodala: This guy should be an All Star already. The Sixers are now the die-hard team of the league along with the Warriors. You NEVER put the Sixers away easy now. They have been down by as much as 25 to come back more than once this season and the new AI is the reason. He can shoot and when he comes down the lane just get out of the way.

  • Ben Gordon The Bulls have a number of players that could be All Stars. Not on this list is Hinrich and maybe Tyrus Thomas who could also be considered. Why are they so bad?

  • Al Horford

  • Hedo Turkoglu

  • Raymond Felton

  • Jose Calderon

  • Luol Deng

  • Gerald Wallace: I bet Sacramento is kicking themselves that they ever got rid of him. The most underrated player in the league, who will eventually be in many All-Star games.

  • Danny Granger

The Shareef Abdur-Rahim picks: (Long shots or one time all-stars)

  • Anthony Parker: This guy can just flat out shoot. He has a few weaknesses, defense being one of them, but if he continues to shoot lights out he could be an All-Star.

  • Thabo Sefolosha

  • Nick Young

  • Andrew Bogut: May be a stretch. Remember when his dad said he would be the best player ever? Yeah that won't happen, but he may be a one time All Star.

  • Rajon Rondo

  • Andrea Bargnani

  • Josh Smith

Sleeper Picks

  • Carlos Delfino

  • Glen Davis

  • T.J. Ford
  • David Lee

Future Sixth Man of the Year:

Those who cannot be on this list are David Lee, and Carlos Arroyo, because I think this is the last year they come off the bench. Corey Maggette is added because next year he will be coming off the bench and have a great chance for sixth man of the year as well as he is playing.

  • Corey Maggette
  • Jason Maxiell
  • Travis Outlaw

Future Most Improved Player of the Year

  • Paul Milsap: Paul Milsap needs one more year with Jerry Sloan and then needs to be traded to someone like the Houston Rockets. He would get plenty of minutes, and the lack of power forward strenth on the rockets would give him the minutes he needs to really show how good this guy can be. But with AK, Harpring, Okur, Boozer, and even Collins, he is never going to get the minutes he needs.
  • Leon Powe
  • Brandon Bass

Future Defensive Player of the Year:

  • Kobe Bryant: Kobe can play amazing defense. I think that if he ever is going to get Michael Jordan-like status he is going to have to win this award just like MJ. And once he figures that out, he will clamp down on the D.
  • Josh Smith: Josh Smith for his size, may be the best Pound for Pound Shot Blocker the league has ever had. Originally he could only block shots coming from the weak-side but that is not the case anymore.
  • Dwight Howard

Long Shots:

  • Gerald Wallace
  • Raja

Future MVP:

-Kobe Bryant

-LeBron James: LeBron will get his MVP award very soon. I don't think it will be in a Cav's uniform. Even the trade this year did not solve the problem that his surrounding team mates just aren't that good. He needs to get out of Cleveland. His relationship with the Brooklyn Nets owner may be just the ticket.

-Kevin Garnett
-Chris Paul

Long Shots:
-Deron Williams

-Amare Stoudemire Even before Shaq came to Phoenix Amare was on fire. He has extended his jumpshot out even further now, and has added a hook he can fire from both sides. As long as after Nash leaves they get a point guard who can get him the ball, he will win the MVP.

-Dwight Howard
-Greg Oden

Super Sleepers:

-Yao Ming

-Brandon Roy: NO ONE picked the Blazers to be this good this year. Brandon Roy is the ultimate leader on the floor. In fact only two players score more points in the fourth quarter, LeBron and Kobe than Roy. He was awesome in the All-Star game, and with Aldridge, Oden, and Outlaw on the floor, defenses will not be able to double team him. If Rudy Fernandez turns out to be a decent point guard next season, Brandon Roy will get more talk about MVP faster than anyone would predict.

The All Alien Team

"Welcome to the show! My name is Sanjaya, former American Idol star. I am hosting this show after Dan Patrick found me eating out of a dog bowl while wearing a leatard and a boyscout belt complete with matching merit badges in an alley behind a Tesoro gas station. Wow! My career is already over."
"Anywho....This award show is to recognize the all ugly, the alien, and the plain phugly that the NBA has to offer."

The first group is the all NBA Alien Team

3. Reggie Miller

2. Dirk Nowitzki

1. Poor Sam Cassell

The MVP of this league is definitely Sam Cassell. I have always wondered why when I see him on TV I throw Reeses Pieces at the TV screen. Now I know.

Dirk has so much against him. He is over a 6"10 European. Not only that, but he is German. That is a recipe for ugly. Doesn't he kind of look like the bearded lady you see at the circus? And now he is slowly morphing into Predator.

And Reggie, I won't say anything mean about him because his sonic ears can probably hear me typing. He might beam down from Klingon land and Spock my neck or something.

Now we move on to the Contendors for "The Missing Link, Neanderthal of the Year award." The long time reign of George Mureson may finally be over, as this years paleolithic people take center stage:

The contendors are: Rock roll please....

Ha Seung-Jin, Chris Kaman, DJ Mbenga
Tough choice, because really all of these guys could easily replace the cavemen in the Geico commercials. I could easily see Chris Kaman saying "Why? Because therapists are smart? My mothers on the line, I will put her on speaker..."

But really the clear choice winner is the Korean Encino Man. Ha Seung-Jin looks like he has been frozen on top of a whooly mammoth for 10,000 years and just thawed out. Add a club to his hand and an astonished face when he sees us light a fire, and he should be awarded the stone slab for Mesazoic Man of the year.

The next award goes to "Goonies 2, Sloth's Brother"

"Goonies 2 has been in the works for years, but the search for the actor that will play Sloth's Brother has finally ended. Thanks to the NBA there were a number of contestants.

Popeye Jones, Charlie Villanueva, and Joakim Noah. Tough, tough choice. You ever hear of those people who have a stroke and one side of the face dies? I think this happen to Popeye Jones....7 times. He seems to have that look in his eyes like a train is always seconds away from plowing through him.

Charlie Villanueva is that same boogie-man you thought was in your closet when you were 6. He looks like someone who is a stalker, axe murderer and collects rare lunchboxes. Really I would never approach him as I am sure if he wasn't an NBA basketball player his next career would be collecting souls for the devil.

Noah? What is going on? His mom was a super model! I am convinced that Noah was injected with Wildebeest genes accidently instead of his small pox vaccine. His face looks like it is about to be put on a Mcdonalds hamburger bun and sold as a Big Mac. Just nasty!

And in a major upset. Joakim Noah wins. Popeye Jones was a close second. But Noah just has so much potential to get even uglier. A few more elbows to his already goat-like face and i am sure one of his eyes will be near his chin, and his teeth are moving away from each otherlike some one just ripped one.

And please let us know who you think is THE UGLIEST NBA PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
More awards coming soon!
