Pau Gasol got the ball rolling...then BAM! NBA exects start acting like idiot lemmings, trading for 
anyone they can get. I feel like this is almost common knowledge now, but my cohort things he has a great counter point.
The Pau Gasol trade was a stroke of pure genius, it's what makes the Lakers a good, big market team. It was smart, well timed and no one saw it coming. They did their homework and found a trade no one thought could happen and found a perfect fit. Instant contender! It reminded me of what the Jazz did to get Boozer a few years back. They new what players were going to be a good fit in their system, saw the oppportunity, didn't notify all of these media outlets with a leak, and closed just what everyone was wondering what was going on. That's how you do it right.
Now look at the Mavericks, a team with a history of doing too little, too late. Don't want to spend too much on a solid point guard, Nash to the Suns, need a big man to jump with Duncan, Dampier makes millions, Lakers get Gasol, They go back and get a....guard?!? Good one, Cuban. Good one. Now what's the result? A one dimensional team has it's one dimension get injured (so long Dirk) and now their hopes are on the shoulders of Kidd...just like they have done in NJ...and that worked out so well!
Next look at the Suns. They've made their living by having a team that doesn't stop running all game long, they know each other so well Nash can just FEEL where they are on the court. They are entertaining to watch and the most exciting team in the league. Marion had some grumblings, but still played well. Then the lakers get Gasol and they throw it all away and get Shaq. He doesn't play their style of ball, he's old, he's a liability, and he can't play Gasol any better than Staudomire could have. I'm sure Dantoni is just happy that his european style of ball has been thrown out and now they play the half-court game like everyone else, only worse.
At the end of the season and heading into the playoff, teams knowing each other well and playing effeciently is what makes the difference, especially in the ultra close Western Conference. The kind of knowledge that playing a season of games can produce. Change it late, shake things up with new blood and, pray you make the playoffs.

The suns have one seven straight! Are you kidding me? Shaq to the Suns will be the reason that the Suns advance far into the Playoffs. As Charles Barkley would say, "The Suns now have stremf." The Suns are destroying teams now, and are starting to score in the high hundreds again. The last 6 scores have been 122, 110, 110, 127, 123, and 132. Plus, now they have the experience of a champion in Shaq, and did you see Shaq destroy the Blazers in Portland?
BeeCee, Lunch at Sonic says the Suns end up with the best record in the West. Ahh yes, the Sun will definitely rise in Phoenix.

I agree with DeeGee too, the Suns trade, although looked bad in the beginning, is really starting to look pretty smart. The Suns are killing everyone and are just as fun to watch as ever. I've always been a Suns fan, since the Barkley/KJ days, but this team really might finally have what it takes.

The best trades were made by...the Spurs! They added Damon S. for depth, then responded to the Gasol trade by acquiring Kurt Thomas, who will reduce Gasol to a bruising, whining, bloody pulp by Game 4 of their series. Bynum is still a pup, and Strawberry Shortcake plays better defense than Gasol.
Don't forget, in the NBA playoffs it's still all about depth and physicality, and the Spurs acquired more of each than any of the other contenders, and will make the Suns and Lakers look like the regular season prima donnas that they really are.

The spurs are just old and Damon Stoudamire is old. The only decent thing they did was pick up Ime. That was a good move as Bowen is getting old too. But the Spurs are finished
Homer - are you freaking kidding me? They screwed things up by getting rid of the 7th best player on their roster? Then signing Kurt Thomas, who is capable of neutralizing Stoudemire AND Gasol?
And if you'd bother watching any games, you'd see that Damon Stoud can still pass the rock and score 10ppg.
Add that to the fact that Ginobili is playing the best ball of his career, and Parker got some much needed rest, and you will see the Spurs taking no longer than 6 games in winning each of their post-season series this year. Write it down and take it to the bank my friend.
